At the risk of sounding overly pious, we look to God to lead The Crossroads. Bottom line, good leadership seizes the opportunities that God presents. Faithful leadership chases down every potential opportunity and mission until God’s choice for us becomes clear. It is not our job to draw up some Master Plan, it’s our job to adjust to the Master’s plan and try every possible open door He directs us to try as we courageously and humbly follow His lead.
But God needs leaders who will try those possible open doors. So beneath His leadership, we need leaders whose role it is to seek God, follow Him, and include others in the adventure — and do it all in teams.
Ministry isn’t meant to be carried or led alone. We’ve seen this in the Bible, ministry at large, and our own experiences as a church. Solitary leaders are vulnerable. Partnerships and teams are more stable, flexible, accountable, representative, and definitely responsive. Team leadership is the model God puts in place throughout Scripture.
Following this example, everything we do at every level is led by teams — in most cases, teams of volunteers leading volunteers. Nearly all that happens in and through The Crossroads — women’s ministry, connecting events, support groups, marriage mentoring, worship, prayer and a long list of other ministries — is and have been led by volunteers.
Sound inclusive? It is. We’re not about hierarchy — just an aligned network of teams and people serving together in the roles God has prepared them to fill. These are the teams who lead The Crossroads.
Elder Team
Our elder team is a team of volunteers nominated by our church community and selected by current team members. They oversee all church affairs, including the role of lead pastor.
Primarily a discernment and vision team, the elder team asks and answers this fundamental question: What is the ultimate mission of our church?
In close partnership with their wives, they’re also responsible to live as examples of what it looks like to follow Christ; love and care for the church; set long-term vision for the church; craft church policy and doctrine; and lead the church in seeking God’s direction, discerning where He is working, and responding to how He is leading The Crossroads.
This team is accountable to God for the kind of church The Crossroads ultimately becomes.
Stewardship Team
Our stewardship team is also comprised of volunteers but they shoulder a completely different mission. This team is appointed by our lead pastor and is gifted with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
The Crossroads passion with regard to finance is simple — we seek to fulfill a full circle stewardship model. That is, we seek to be abundantly faithful in the execution of our fiscal responsibilities with integrity even as we hopefully expect that same faithfulness in the giving behaviors of our community.
This strategic finance team is marked by a keen ability to strategically discern and fulfill the ministry plan as decided by our elder team and lead pastor.
Lead Pastor
Every community needs a leader: someone responsible for final decisions, who discerns clear direction and leads people safely and well. For The Crossroads, that person is lead pastor Steve Wyatt. Steve leads in close partnership with the other elders and functions as the conduit between our elder team [who sets the vision] and our staff team [who carries out that vision].
Staff Team
Our staff is commissioned to fulfill our church’s vision as outlined by our elder team and as directed by our lead pastor. Together, our staff embraces the heart of every ministry at The Crossroads and leads operationally on a day-to-day basis.
It is their task to raise up teams to join them in putting the Elders’ vision into action. From home groups to women’s ministry — and every other ministry we offer — the staff works together to align, connect, and carry out the passion and purpose of The Crossroads.
Volunteer Teams
There is no doubt that the most outstanding team at The Crossroads is our volunteer team. On any given Sunday, multiplied dozens who serve as directors, greeters, S.W.A.T. members, techs, teachers and iCare helpers are at their posts ready to serve our community.
On any given other day, our volunteers can be found leading small groups, ministering to youth, feeding the homeless or any number of ministries that make our ministry so diverse.
Many of our volunteers lead by following…others follow by leading. In fact, that’s what ALL of us do — and that’s how ALL of us find our stride in becoming better leaders.
